1- RUG FEATURES

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns were also produced entirely by hand using a spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots were dyed using madder dye, i.e., natural materials. For example, to obtain the red color, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called madder-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from madder-dyed yarns become brighter with use. On the other hand, this rug is a top-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, or double knot, technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 300,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the rich rug weaving tradition of the Ottoman Empire. These rugs were produced especially in the 16th and 17th centuries for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Moreover, they were specially produced for the residences and palace rooms of the palace inhabitants and high-ranking diplomats of the Ottoman Empire.

These rugs generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani rugs. These motifs not only reflect the aesthetic value of the rug but also bear traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally colorful and produced to harmonize with modern and classic style furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies according to the rug's material and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with madder, chemical-containing carpet shampoo or detergent should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly rinsed with a paper towel; then, a cloth with lathered white bar soap should be used to wipe the area. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner whom you trust and who washes hand-woven rugs.
