1- RUG SPECIFICATIONS

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are entirely handmade using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with madder, meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called madder-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from madder-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance with use. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 300,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the rich rug weaving tradition of the Ottoman Empire. These rugs were produced especially for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues during the 16th and 17th centuries. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Moreover, they were specially produced for the residences of Ottoman imperial family members and high-ranking diplomats, and for palace rooms.

These rugs generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are among the motifs used in Sultani rugs. These motifs not only reflect the aesthetic value of the rug but also bear traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are usually colorful and produced in a style that harmonizes with modern and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies according to the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with madder, chemical-containing carpet shampoo or detergent should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered and the affected area wiped with a cloth. It should also be noted that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this rug to a professional carpet cleaner whom you trust and who washes hand-woven carpets.
