1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle (kirman). The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with madder (root dye), which means natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets made from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance with use. Furthermore, this carpet is a top-quality carpet in terms of weaving density and is woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 1,125,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Discovered in 1949 in the monumental tombs called Pazyryk Kurgans belonging to the Huns in the Altai Mountains of Central Asia, this carpet is the oldest known knotted Turkish carpet. The Pazyryk carpet is woven using human, animal, and plant motifs bearing traces of Turkish culture. While the squares forming the central patterns of the carpet contain four-leaf plant motifs, one of the wide borders features Hun Turks on horseback in rows. Finally, griffin figures are found in the narrow border.

Its discovery holds great significance for archaeologists because this carpet provides important clues about how ancient carpet weaving and artistic expression developed. Today, the Pazyryk carpet is exhibited and researched in many museums as both an artistic and historical artifact.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with madder, carpet shampoo or detergent containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, first thoroughly blot the affected area with a paper towel; then, lather white bar soap and wipe the area with a cloth.
