1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this rug are made of cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed using natural root dyes. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this manner are called root-dyed yarns. Rugs made from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance with use. On the other hand, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 900,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Discovered in 1949 in the monumental tombs called Pazyryk Kurgans, belonging to the Huns in the Altai Mountains of Central Asia, this rug is the oldest known knotted Turkish rug. The Pazyryk rug was woven using human, animal, and floral motifs that bear traces of Turkish culture. While the square patterns forming the central design of the rug contain a four-leaf floral motif, one of the wide borders features rows of Huns on horseback. Finally, griffon figures are located on the narrow border.

Its discovery is of great importance to archaeologists because this rug provides important clues about how ancient carpet weaving and artistic expression developed. Today, the Pazyryk rug is exhibited and researched in many museums as both an artistic and historical artifact.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoo or detergent containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, a cloth with lathered white bar soap should be used to wipe the area. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain penetrates the warp and becomes much harder to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional carpet cleaner whom you trust and who washes hand-knotted rugs.
