1- RUG SPECIFICATIONS
This rug features a cotton warp and weft with wool yarn knots. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots were dyed using madder dye, meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called yarns dyed with madder dye. Rugs produced from yarns dyed with madder dye gain a more vibrant appearance as they are used. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality piece in terms of knot density and was woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 450,000 hand knots were used in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG
Sultani rugs are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet-weaving tradition. These rugs were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. They were produced exclusively for the residents of the Ottoman Empire's palaces and the residences of high-ranking diplomats and palace chambers.
These rugs generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are motifs used in Sultani rugs. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the rug, they also carry traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in colors that harmonize with both modern and classic style furniture.
3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Rug cleaning varies depending on the material of the rug and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made from wool yarns dyed with madder dye, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; afterwards, the area should be wiped with a cloth using the lather of white bar soap. It should also be kept in mind that prompt intervention is essential when something is spilled on a rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will seep into the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you have this rug washed by a professional rug cleaner you trust who specializes in hand-woven rugs. If you reside in Istanbul, you can contact us for rug cleaning services.
