1- RUG FEATURES

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are made from wool yarn. The yarns are entirely hand-spun using a spindle (kirman). The wool yarns used for the knots are colored with madder dye, meaning natural materials. For instance, to achieve the red color, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn absorbs the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this manner are called madder-dyed yarns. Rugs made from madder-dyed yarns become brighter with use. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 600,000 hand-knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the rich rug weaving tradition of the Ottoman Empire. These rugs were produced primarily for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were specially produced for the residences of Ottoman palace residents and high-ranking diplomats, and for palace rooms.

These rugs generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are among the motifs used in Sultani rugs. These motifs not only reflect the aesthetic value of the rug but also carry traces from the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are typically colorful, produced in a style that will harmonize with modern and classic furniture.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made from wool yarns dyed with madder, chemical-containing carpet shampoos or detergents should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth lathered with white bar soap. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is crucial when something spills on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this rug to a professional carpet cleaner whom you trust and who specializes in hand-knotted rug cleaning.
