1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are entirely handmade using a kirman. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with root dyes, meaning natural materials. For example, to achieve the red color, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this manner are called root-dyed yarns. Rugs made from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance with use. Furthermore, this rug is of superior quality in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 1,000,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

The production of Mamluk carpets began in workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. By the 16th century, the Mamluk carpet's fame had spread worldwide, and until then, it was an indispensable carpet for Mamluk sultans and Western high aristocrats. Thanks to this reputation, it was exported from the present-day Egyptian region to the entire world. After Yavuz Sultan Selim abolished the Mamluk state, the Mamluk carpet gained new characteristics under Ottoman influence. In this form, it was again exported worldwide and has retained its characteristics to this day.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoo or detergent containing chemical substances should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly rinsed with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth, lathering white bar soap. It should also be noted that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain penetrates the warp and becomes much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner you trust who specializes in hand-woven rugs.
