1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this carpet are made of cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are also entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with natural dyes, i.e., root dyes. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets made from root-dyed yarns become brighter with use. Furthermore, this carpet is a high-quality carpet in terms of weaving density and is woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 1,450,000 hand knots were made in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

The production of Mamluk carpets began in workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. By the 16th century, Mamluk carpets had spread their fame all over the world, becoming indispensable for Mamluk sultans and Western high aristocrats. Thanks to this reputation, they were exported from the present-day Egyptian region to the entire world. After Sultan Selim I abolished the Mamluk state, Mamluk carpets gained new characteristics under Ottoman influence. In this form, they were again exported worldwide and have preserved their characteristics to this day.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with natural dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, first rinse the affected area thoroughly with a paper towel; then, lather white bar soap and wipe the area with a cloth. It should also be noted that immediate action is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner whom you trust and who specializes in hand-woven carpets.
