2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET
Hereke carpet is one of the most important examples of Turkey's traditional carpet weaving art. The history of Hereke carpet dates back to the Ottoman Empire period, and these carpets gained great fame, especially in the 19th century. Hereke is a district in Kocaeli province, east of Istanbul. Here, the art of carpet weaving developed under the patronage of the Ottoman palace.
Hereke carpets, which were first produced in the Hereke Fabrika-i Hümayun (Imperial Factory) established by Sultan Abdülmecid, the sultan of the time, in 1843, were used for the decoration of palaces. Today, it is possible to see Hereke carpets produced in this factory in the Beylerbeyi, Çırağan, and Dolmabahçe palaces.
With the Republican era, Hereke carpets gained significant demand both in the domestic and international markets. Today, Hereke carpets are highly valued by both collectors and carpet enthusiasts. Furthermore, these carpets have adapted to modern times by preserving traditional techniques and integrating innovative designs, thus continuing to sustain cultural heritage.
Throughout history, Hereke carpets have been considered not only a floor covering but also an important representative of Ottoman art and culture. Each of them is a unique work of art with its elegant patterns and masterful weaving.
3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. When cleaning this carpet, carpet shampoo or detergent containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using lathered white bar soap. It should also be noted that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner whom you trust and who specializes in hand-woven carpets. If you reside in Istanbul, you can contact us for carpet cleaning.
