1- RUG FEATURES

 

The weft and warp of this rug are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are also entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with natural dyes (kök boya). For example, to obtain the color red, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called natural-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from natural-dyed yarns become brighter with use. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 1,620,000 hand knots were made in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

The production of Mamluk rugs began in workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. By the 16th century, the fame of Mamluk rugs had spread throughout the world, becoming an indispensable rug for Mamluk sultans and Western high aristocrats. Thanks to this reputation, they were exported from the present-day Egyptian region to the whole world. After Yavuz Sultan Selim abolished the Mamluk state, Mamluk rugs gained new features with Ottoman influence. In this form, they were again exported worldwide and have preserved their characteristics to this day.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the material of the rug and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made from wool yarns dyed with natural dyes, carpet shampoo or detergent containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using lathered white bar soap. It should also be noted that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug without being wiped for a long time, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner whom you trust and who specializes in hand-woven rugs.
