1- RUG FEATURES
The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns were entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots were dyed with madder (kök boya), meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called madder-dyed yarns. Rugs made from madder-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance with use. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 1,000,000 hand knots were made in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG
This rug, discovered in 1949 in the monumental tombs called Pazyryk Kurgans belonging to the Huns in the Altai Mountains of Central Asia, is the oldest known knotted Turkish rug. The Pazyryk rug was woven using human, animal, and plant motifs that carry traces of Turkish culture. While four-leaf plant motifs are found within the squares forming the central patterns of the rug, one of the wide borders features Huns on horseback in rows. Finally, griffon figures are located in the narrow border.
Its discovery is of great importance to archaeologists because this rug provides important clues about how ancient carpet weaving and artistic expression developed. Today, the Pazyryk rug is exhibited and researched in many museums as both an artistic and historical artifact.
3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Rug cleaning varies depending on the rug's material and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with madder, carpet shampoo or detergent containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid spills on this rug, first thoroughly blot the affected area with a paper towel; then, lather white bar soap and wipe the area with a cloth. It should also be noted that immediate intervention is crucial when something spills on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend having this rug washed by a professional rug cleaner whom you trust and who specializes in hand-woven rugs. If you reside in Istanbul, you can contact us for rug cleaning.
