1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are also entirely hand-spun using a spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with natural root dyes. For example, to obtain the color red, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Rugs made from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance with use. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 810,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

The production of Mamluk carpets began in Cairo workshops in the 14th century. By the 16th century, Mamluk carpets, whose fame had spread throughout the world, were indispensable for Mamluk sultans and Western high aristocrats. Thanks to this reputation, they were exported from the present-day Egypt region to all corners of the world. After Sultan Selim I eliminated the Mamluk state, Mamluk carpets gained new characteristics under Ottoman influence. In this form, they were again exported worldwide and have maintained their characteristics to this day.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made from root-dyed wool yarns, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid spills on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered, and the affected area should be wiped with a cloth. It should also be noted that immediate intervention is very important when something spills on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain penetrates the warp and becomes much harder to remove. Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner whom you trust and who specializes in hand-woven carpets.
