1- FEATURES OF THE CARPET

The weft and warp of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots were dyed using root dyes, that is, natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called yarns dyed with root dye. Carpets produced from yarns dyed with root dyes become brighter in appearance as they are used. On the other hand, this carpet is a high-quality carpet in terms of weaving density and has been woven with the Turkish knot, or in other words, the double-knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 1,350,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These carpets were produced especially in the 16th and 17th centuries to be used in Ottoman palaces and important venues. These carpets were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Moreover, they were produced specifically for the residents of the Ottoman palace and the residences of high-ranking diplomats, as well as for palace rooms.

These carpets generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani carpets. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet, they also carry traces of the era in which it was woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in a style that will harmonize with colorful, modern, and classic style furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies according to the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dye, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the relevant part should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using lathered white bar soap. It should also be kept in mind that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will seep into the warp, making it much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner you trust that washes hand-woven carpets.
