1- CARPET SPECIFICATIONS

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots were dyed using root dyes, meaning natural materials. For instance, to obtain the color red, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the petals; yarns dyed in this manner are referred to as root-dyed yarns. Carpets produced from root-dyed yarns gain a more lustrous appearance the more they are used. On the other hand, this carpet is a high-quality product in terms of weaving density and was woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Iranian carpets. Finally, approximately 325,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These carpets were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and significant venues, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries. These carpets were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were produced specifically for the residents of the Ottoman Empire's palaces and the residences of high-ranking diplomats, as well as palace chambers.

These carpets generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire's cultural and artistic traditions. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are motifs used in Sultani carpets. These motifs, while reflecting the aesthetic value of the carpet, also carry traces of the era in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in vibrant styles that harmonize with both modern and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of stain. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using the lather of white bar soap. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped off, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner you trust who specializes in handwoven carpets.
