1- FEATURES OF THE RUG

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots were dyed using madder dye, meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called madder-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from madder-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance the more they are used. On the other hand, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and has been woven using the Turkish knot, or in other words, the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 325,000 hand knots were made in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich rug-weaving tradition. These rugs were produced specifically to be used in Ottoman palaces and significant venues, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were produced specifically for the residents of the Ottoman Empire's palaces, as well as for the residences of high-ranking diplomats and palace chambers.

These rugs generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani rugs. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the rug, they also carry traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in colorful styles that can harmonize with both modern and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the material of the rug and the type of stain. Since this rug is made of wool yarn dyed with madder dye, rug shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be blotted thoroughly with a paper towel; afterwards, the area should be wiped with a cloth using white bar soap lather. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being cleaned, the stain will penetrate the warp, making it much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the cleaning of this rug to a professional rug cleaner you trust who specializes in handwoven rugs.
