1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this carpet are made of cotton, while the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots are dyed using root dyes, which are natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn absorbs the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets produced from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance the more they are used. Furthermore, this carpet is a high-quality piece in terms of weaving density and has been woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double-knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 325,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These carpets were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries. These carpets were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Moreover, they were produced exclusively for the residents of the Ottoman Empire’s palaces and the residences of high-ranking diplomats, as well as for palace rooms.

These carpets generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire's cultural and artistic traditions. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani carpets. These motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet while carrying traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in colorful styles that harmonize with both modern and classic furniture.

 

3-CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of stain. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dye, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered, and the area should be wiped with a cloth. It should also be kept in mind that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp, making it much harder to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner you trust who specializes in hand-woven carpets.
