1- FEATURES OF THE CARPET

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The threads are produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool threads used in the knots are dyed using root dyes, which means natural materials. For example, to obtain the red color, wool threads are boiled with rose petals, and the thread takes on the color of the rose petal; threads dyed in this way are called root-dyed threads. Carpets produced from root-dyed threads acquire a brighter appearance as they are used. On the other hand, this carpet is a high-quality product in terms of weave density and has been woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 225,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These carpets were produced, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, to be used in Ottoman palaces and important venues. These carpets were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were produced specifically for palace residents and the residences and palace rooms of high-ranking diplomats of the Ottoman Empire.

These carpets generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire’s cultural and artistic traditions. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are motifs used in Sultani carpets. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet, they also carry traces of the era in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in styles that will harmonize with colorful, modern, and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool threads dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using the lather of white bar soap. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp, making it much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the cleaning of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner you trust who handles hand-woven carpets.
