1- RUG FEATURES

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with madder (root dye), meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called madder-dyed yarns. Rugs made from madder-dyed yarns become brighter with use. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 350,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

The emergence of Ushak rugs dates back to the 15th century. During this period in the Ottoman Empire, rug weaving and textile arts began to spread, and with this, Ushak became an important rug production center. Also, during this period, thanks to the right to trade granted to ambassadors who came to the country as a result of capitulations, Ushak rugs began to appear abroad.

Ushak Rugs gained significant importance during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, and new qualities and patterns unique to Ushak were woven with special weaving masters brought by Suleiman the Magnificent from the Azerbaijan region. These patterns were designed by ornamental artists and painters. Today, Ushak rugs are still used in homes and are also exhibited in palaces and museums.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the rug's material and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made from wool yarns dyed with madder, rug shampoos or detergents containing chemical substances should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, a cloth should be used to wipe the area with lathered white bar soap. It is also important to remember that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner whom you trust and who specializes in hand-knotted rugs.
