1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are also produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed using Vegetable Dyeds, i.e., natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called Vegetable-dyed yarns. Carpets produced from Vegetable-dyed yarns become brighter with use. Furthermore, this carpet is a top-quality carpet in terms of weaving density and is woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 810,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

The production of Mamluk carpets began in workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. By the 16th century, Mamluk carpets, whose fame had spread worldwide, were indispensable for Mamluk sultans and Western high aristocrats. Thanks to this renown, they were exported from the present-day Egyptian region to the whole world. After Sultan Selim I eliminated the Mamluk state, Mamluk carpets gained new features under Ottoman influence. In this form, they continued to be exported worldwide and have preserved their characteristics to this day.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the carpet's material and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with Vegetable Dyeds, carpet shampoo or detergent containing chemical substances should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered and the area wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain penetrates the warp and becomes much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner who specializes in hand-woven carpets and whom you trust.
