1- FEATURES OF THE CARPET

The warp and weft of this carpet are made of cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots were dyed using root dyes, that is, natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets produced from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance the more they are used. On the other hand, this carpet is a high-quality piece in terms of weaving density and was woven using the Turkish knot technique, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Iranian carpets. Finally, approximately 325,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These carpets were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and significant venues, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries. These carpets were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. They were produced specifically for the residents of the Ottoman Empire’s palaces and the residences of high-ranking diplomats, as well as for palace chambers.

These carpets generally carry traces of the Ottoman Empire’s cultural and artistic traditions. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani carpets. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet, they also carry traces of the era in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in colorful styles that will harmonize with both modern and classic furniture.

 

3-CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; afterwards, white bar soap should be lathered and the area should be wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on a carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove.
