1- FEATURES OF THE CARPET

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots were dyed using madder dye, meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called yarns dyed with madder dye. Carpets produced from yarns dyed with madder dye gain a more vibrant appearance as they are used. On the other hand, this carpet is of high quality in terms of weaving density and has been woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 650,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These carpets were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues, especially during the 16th and 17th centuries. These carpets were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were produced specifically for the residents of the Ottoman Empire’s palaces and for the residences and palace rooms of high-ranking diplomats.

These carpets generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are motifs used in Sultani carpets. These motifs, while reflecting the aesthetic value of the carpet, also carry traces of the era in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in styles that will harmonize with colorful, modern, and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with madder dye, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered and the area wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on a carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner you trust who washes hand-woven carpets.
