1- FEATURES OF THE CARPET

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed using root dyes, that is, natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called yarns dyed with root dyes. Carpets produced from yarns dyed with root dyes acquire a brighter appearance as they are used. On the other hand, our carpet is of top quality in terms of weaving density and has been woven using the Turkish knot, or in other words, the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 810,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

The production of Mamluk carpets began in the workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. By the 16th century, the Mamluk carpet, whose fame had spread all over the world, was an indispensable carpet for Mamluk sultans and high-ranking Western aristocrats until that time. Thanks to this fame, it was exported from the present-day Egyptian region to the whole world. After Yavuz Sultan Selim eliminated the Mamluk state, the Mamluk carpet gained new features under Ottoman influence. In this form, it continued to be exported to the whole world and has preserved its characteristics to the present day.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies according to the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected part should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; afterwards, white bar soap should be lathered, and the area should be wiped with a cloth. It should also be noted that in case of a spill on the carpet, immediate intervention is very important. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped off, the stain will seep into the warp, making it much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner who you trust and who washes handwoven carpets.
