1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this carpet are made of cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots are dyed using root dyes, which means natural materials. For example, to obtain the red color, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called yarns dyed with root dyes. Carpets produced from yarns dyed with root dyes gain a brighter appearance as they are used. On the other hand, this carpet is of high quality in terms of weaving density and has been woven with the Turkish knot technique, also known as the double knot; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 1,620,000 hand knots were made in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

The production of Mamluk carpets began in the workshops of Cairo in the 14th century. The Mamluk carpet, whose fame spread all over the world until the 16th century, was an indispensable carpet for Mamluk sultans and high-ranking Western aristocrats until that time. Thanks to this reputation, it was exported from the modern-day Egyptian region to the whole world. After Yavuz Sultan Selim eliminated the Mamluk state, the Mamluk carpet gained new features under Ottoman influence. In this form, it continued to be exported to the whole world and has preserved its characteristics to the present day.

 

3-CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemical substances should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the relevant area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using the lather of white bar soap. It should also not be forgotten that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner you trust who washes handwoven carpets.
