1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed using natural Vegetable Dyeds. For example, to achieve the red color, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called Vegetable-dyed yarns. Carpets made from Vegetable-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance with use. Furthermore, this carpet is a high-quality carpet in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 810,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

The production of Mamluk carpets began in workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. By the 16th century, Mamluk carpets, whose fame had spread worldwide, were indispensable for Mamluk sultans and Western high aristocrats. Thanks to this reputation, they were exported from the modern-day Egyptian region to the whole world. After Yavuz Sultan Selim abolished the Mamluk state, Mamluk carpets gained new characteristics under Ottoman influence. In this form, they were again exported worldwide and have maintained their characteristics to this day.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the carpet's material and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made from wool yarns dyed with Vegetable Dyeds, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly rinsed with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered and the area wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner whom you trust and who washes hand-woven carpets.
