1- RUG FEATURES

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are also entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with madder, meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain the red color, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called madder-dyed yarns. Rugs made from madder-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance with use. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 810,000 hand knots were made in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

The production of Mamluk carpets began in workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. By the 16th century, the fame of Mamluk carpets had spread throughout the world, and they were indispensable for Mamluk sultans and Western high aristocrats alike. Thanks to this reputation, they were exported from the present-day Egyptian region to the entire world. After Sultan Selim I abolished the Mamluk state, Mamluk carpets gained new characteristics under Ottoman influence. In this form, they were again exported worldwide and have preserved their characteristics to this day.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the carpet's material and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with madder, chemical-containing carpet shampoo or detergent should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered, and the affected area wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate action is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain penetrates the warp and becomes much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner you trust who specializes in hand-woven carpets.
