1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are entirely handmade using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with root dyes, i.e., natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets produced from root-dyed yarns acquire a brighter appearance with use. Furthermore, this carpet is a top-quality carpet in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 300,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Discovered in 1949 in the monumental tombs called Pazyryk Kurgans belonging to the Huns in the Altai Mountains of Central Asia, this carpet is the oldest known knotted Turkish carpet. The Pazyryk carpet is woven using human, animal, and floral motifs reflecting Turkish culture. Within the squares that form the central patterns of the carpet, there are four-leaved floral motifs; in one of the wide borders, there are rows of Huns on horseback. Finally, griffin figures are featured in the narrow border.

Its discovery holds great importance for archaeologists because this carpet provides significant clues about how ancient carpet weaving and artistic expression developed. Today, the Pazyryk carpet is exhibited and researched in many museums as both an artistic and historical artifact.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies according to the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemical substances should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth, lathering white bar soap. It should also be noted that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain penetrates the warp and becomes much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner you trust who specializes in hand-woven carpets.
