1- FEATURES OF THE CARPET

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarn is produced entirely by hand using a spinning wheel. The wool yarn used for the knots is dyed using root dyes, meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarn is boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the petals; yarn dyed in this manner is called root-dyed yarn. Carpets produced from root-dyed yarn gain a more lustrous appearance as they are used. Furthermore, this carpet is of superior quality in terms of weave density and was woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 1,125,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These carpets were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and significant venues, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries. They were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Moreover, they were produced exclusively for the residents of the Ottoman Empire's palaces and the residences of high-ranking diplomats and palace chambers.

These carpets generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire's cultural and artistic traditions. Floral patterns, tree motifs, geometric designs, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani carpets. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet, they also carry traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in styles that are colorful and compatible with both modern and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of stain. Since this carpet is made of wool yarn dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemical substances should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered and the area wiped with a cloth. It should also not be forgotten that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp, making it much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner that you trust and that specializes in hand-woven carpets.
