1- FEATURES OF THE RUG

The warp and weft of this rug are made of cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots were dyed using madder dye, meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called yarns dyed with madder dye. Rugs produced from yarns dyed with madder dye acquire a brighter appearance as they are used. On the other hand, this rug is a top-quality rug in terms of knot density and was woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Iranian rugs. Finally, approximately 750,000 hand knots were made in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich rug-weaving tradition. These rugs were produced primarily to be used in Ottoman palaces and important venues, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were produced specifically for the residents of the Ottoman Empire's palaces and the residences of high-ranking diplomats and palace chambers.

These rugs generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire's cultural and artistic traditions. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani rugs. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the rug, they also carry traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in styles that will harmonize with colorful, modern, and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies according to the material of the rug and the type of stain. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with madder dye, rug shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. When any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be blotted thoroughly with a paper towel; afterwards, white bar soap should be lathered, and the area should be wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped off, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove.
