1- FEATURES OF THE RUG

The weft and warp of this rug are made of cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots were dyed using root dyes, which means natural materials were used. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the petal; such yarns are referred to as root-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from root-dyed yarns gain a more lustrous appearance as they are used. On the other hand, this rug is a high-quality piece in terms of weaving density and has been woven using the Turkish knot, or double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Iranian rugs. Finally, approximately 325,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These rugs were produced primarily in the 16th and 17th centuries for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues. They were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were produced specifically for palace residents and the residences of high-ranking diplomats of the Ottoman Empire, as well as for palace chambers.

These rugs generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire’s cultural and artistic traditions. Floral patterns, tree motifs, geometric designs, and figurative symbols are motifs used in Sultani rugs. These motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the rug while also carrying traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in colorful styles that harmonize with both modern and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the rug's material and the type of stain. Since this rug is made of wool yarn dyed with root dyes, rug shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using the lather of white bar soap. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on a rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much harder to remove.
