1- FEATURES OF THE RUG

This rug features a cotton warp and weft with wool yarn knots. The yarns are produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed using root dyes, which are natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn absorbs the color of the petal; yarns dyed in this manner are referred to as root-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from root-dyed yarns gain a more lustrous appearance as they are used. Furthermore, this rug is a premium-quality piece in terms of weaving density and has been woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 325,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These rugs were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and significant venues, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Moreover, they were custom-produced for the residents of the Ottoman Empire's palaces and for the residences and palace chambers of high-ranking diplomats.

These rugs generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani rugs. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the rug, they also carry traces of the era in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in vibrant colors to harmonize with both modern and classic furniture styles.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies according to the material of the rug and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made from wool yarns dyed with root dyes, rug shampoos or detergents containing chemical substances should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; afterward, a white bar soap should be lathered and the area wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on a rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped off, the stain will penetrate the warp, making it much more difficult to remove.
