1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots are dyed using root dyes, which means natural materials. For instance, to obtain the color red, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn absorbs the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets produced from root-dyed yarns gain a more lustrous appearance as they are used. On the other hand, this carpet is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and has been woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 600,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the rich carpet-weaving tradition of the Ottoman Empire. These carpets were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues, especially during the 16th and 17th centuries. These carpets were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. They were produced exclusively for the residents of the Ottoman Empire’s palaces and for the residences and palace chambers of high-ranking diplomats.

These carpets generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are motifs used in Sultani carpets. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet, they also carry traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in vibrant colors to complement both modern and classic furniture styles.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies according to the material of the carpet and the type of stain. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using the lather of a white bar soap. It should also be noted that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you have this carpet cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner you trust who specializes in handwoven carpets.
