1- RUG FEATURES

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with root dyes, meaning natural materials. For example, to achieve the color red, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance with use. Furthermore, this rug is a top-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 810,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

The production of Mamluk rugs began in workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. By the 16th century, the fame of Mamluk rugs had spread worldwide, making them indispensable for Mamluk sultans and Western high aristocrats. Thanks to this reputation, they were exported from the present-day Egyptian region all over the world. After Sultan Selim I abolished the Mamluk state, Mamluk rugs acquired new characteristics under Ottoman influence. In this form, they were again exported worldwide and have retained their features to this day.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the rug's material and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made of root-dyed wool yarns, chemical-containing rug shampoos or detergents should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth lathered with white bar soap. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner whom you trust and who specializes in hand-woven rugs.
