1- CARPET FEATURES

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are also produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with natural root dyes. For example, to achieve red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Rugs made from root-dyed yarns acquire a brighter appearance with use. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; this feature makes it more durable and gives it a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 810,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- CARPET HISTORY

The production of Mamluk carpets began in workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. By the 16th century, the fame of Mamluk carpets had spread throughout the world, becoming an indispensable item for Mamluk sultans and high-ranking Western aristocrats. Due to this reputation, they were exported from the present-day Egyptian region to all parts of the world. After Sultan Selim I abolished the Mamluk state, Mamluk carpets gained new characteristics under Ottoman influence. In this form, they were again exported worldwide and have retained their features to this day.

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made from wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid spills on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, a cloth with lathered white bar soap should be used to wipe the area. It should also be noted that immediate intervention is very important when something spills on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain penetrates the warp and becomes much harder to remove. Finally, we recommend entrusting the washing of this rug to a professional carpet cleaner whom you trust and who specializes in hand-woven rugs.
