1- FEATURES OF THE RUG

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, while the knots are wool yarn. The threads are produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots are dyed using root dyes, which are natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance the more they are used. On the other hand, this rug is a high-quality piece in terms of weaving density and has been woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 600,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These rugs were produced primarily for use in Ottoman palaces and significant venues during the 16th and 17th centuries. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were specially produced for the residences of palace inhabitants and high-ranking diplomats of the Ottoman Empire, as well as for palace chambers.

These rugs generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire's cultural and artistic traditions. Floral patterns, tree motifs, geometric designs, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani rugs. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the rug, they also carry traces of the era in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in styles that are colorful and compatible with both modern and classic furniture.

3-CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the material of the rug and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made of root-dyed wool yarns, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using a lather of white bar soap. It should also be noted that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on a rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being cleaned, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner that you trust and that handles hand-woven rugs.
