1- CARPET FEATURES
The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are also produced entirely by hand using a kirman (drop spindle). The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with root dyes, i.e., natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets made from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance with use. On the other hand, this carpet is a high-quality carpet in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian carpets. Finally, approximately 300,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.
Weaving Type: Hand-woven

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET
Discovered in 1949 in the monumental tombs called Pazyryk kurgans belonging to the Huns in the Altai Mountains of Central Asia, this carpet is the oldest known knotted Turkish carpet. The Pazyryk carpet was woven using human, animal, and plant motifs bearing traces of Turkish culture. While there are four-leaf plant motifs within the squares forming the central patterns of the carpet, one of the wide borders features rows of Huns on horseback. Finally, griffin figures are found on the narrow border.
Its discovery is of great importance to archaeologists because this carpet provides important clues about how ancient carpet weaving and artistic expression developed. Today, the Pazyryk carpet is exhibited and researched in many museums as both an artistic and historical artifact.
3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, a white bar of soap should be lathered and wiped over the area with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend having this carpet professionally cleaned by a trusted hand-woven carpet cleaner. If you reside in Istanbul, you can contact us for carpet cleaning.
