1- RUG FEATURES
The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns are entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with madder dye, meaning natural materials. For example, to achieve red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this manner are called madder-dyed yarns. Rugs made from madder-dyed yarns become more vibrant with use. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; this feature makes it more durable and gives it a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 1,000,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG
Sultani rugs are an important part of the rich rug weaving tradition of the Ottoman Empire. These rugs were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Additionally, they were specially produced for the residences of palace inhabitants and high-ranking diplomats of the Ottoman Empire, and for palace rooms.
These rugs generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are among the motifs used in Sultani rugs. These motifs not only reflect the aesthetic value of the rug but also carry traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are typically produced in colorful, modern, and classic styles to harmonize with furniture.
3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Rug cleaning varies depending on the rug's material and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with madder dye, chemical rug shampoos or detergents should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, a cloth with lathered white bar soap should be used to wipe the area. It is also important to remember that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend having this rug washed by a professional rug cleaner who you trust and who specializes in hand-woven rugs. If you reside in Istanbul, you can contact us for rug cleaning.
