1- RUG FEATURES
The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed with madder, meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain the red color, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called madder-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from madder-dyed yarns become brighter with use. On the other hand, this rug is a top-quality rug in terms of weaving density and is woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 450,000 hand knots were made in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG
Sultani rugs are an important part of the rich rug weaving tradition of the Ottoman Empire. These rugs were produced especially in the 16th and 17th centuries for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Additionally, they were specially produced for the residences of Ottoman Empire palace inhabitants and high-ranking diplomats, and for palace rooms.
These rugs generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are among the motifs used in Sultani rugs. These motifs not only reflect the aesthetic value of the rug but also carry traces from the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are usually colorful; produced in a style that harmonizes with modern and classical furniture.
3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Rug cleaning varies according to the material of the rug and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made from madder-dyed wool yarns, chemical-containing rug shampoo or detergent should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using lathered white bar soap. It should also be noted that immediate action is very important when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner whom you trust and who washes hand-woven rugs. If you reside in Istanbul, you can contact us for rug cleaning.
