1- FEATURES OF THE RUG

The warp and weft of this rug are made of cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots were dyed using madder, meaning natural materials. To give an example, to obtain the red color, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called yarns dyed with madder. Rugs produced from yarns dyed with madder gain a brighter appearance as they are used. On the other hand, our rug is a top-quality rug in terms of weaving density and was woven using the Turkish knot technique, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 1,200,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

The production of Mamluk rugs began in workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. The Mamluk rug, whose fame spread all over the world until the 16th century, was an indispensable rug for Mamluk sultans and Western high aristocrats until then. Thanks to this fame, it was exported from the modern-day Egyptian region to the whole world. After Yavuz Sultan Selim eliminated the Mamluk state, the Mamluk rug gained new characteristics under Ottoman influence. In this form, it was again exported all over the world and has maintained its characteristics to the present day.

3-CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies according to the material of the rug and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with madder, rug shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. When any liquid is spilled on this rug, the relevant part should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; afterwards, the area should be wiped with a cloth using lathered white bar soap. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped off, the stain will seep into the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner you trust who washes hand-woven rugs. If you reside in Istanbul, you can contact us for rug washing.
