1- FEATURES OF THE RUG

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, while the knots are wool yarn. The threads were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots were dyed using root dyes, which means natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from root-dyed yarns gain a more vibrant appearance as they are used. On the other hand, this rug is a top-quality rug in terms of weave density and has been woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Iranian rugs. Finally, approximately 500,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich rug-weaving tradition. These rugs were produced primarily in the 16th and 17th centuries to be used in Ottoman palaces and significant spaces. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were specially produced for the residents of the Ottoman Empire’s palaces and the residences and palace rooms of high-ranking diplomats.

These rugs generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani rugs. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the rug, they also carry traces of the era in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in styles that harmonize with colorful, modern, and classic furniture.

 

3-CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the rug's material and the type of dirt. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, rug shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using the lather of plain white bar soap. It should also be kept in mind that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on a rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being cleaned, the stain will seep into the warp, making it much more difficult to remove.
