The wool yarn used in the knots is dyed with root dyes, meaning natural materials. For example, to obtain red, the wool yarn is boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petal; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Rugs made from root-dyed yarns develop a brighter appearance with use. The origins of Uşak carpets date back to the 15th century. During this period, carpet weaving and textile arts began to spread in the Ottoman Empire, and Uşak became an important carpet production center. Uşak carpets gained significant importance during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, and new qualities and patterns unique to Uşak were woven by special weavers brought from the Azerbaijan region by Sultan Suleiman. These patterns were designed by decorative artists and painters. Today, Uşak carpets are still used in homes and are also displayed in palaces and museums.
