1- RUG SPECIFICATIONS

This rug features a cotton warp and weft with wool pile knots. The yarns are entirely produced by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots are dyed using root dyes—that is, natural materials. For instance, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the petals; yarns dyed in this manner are referred to as root-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from root-dyed yarns gain a more lustrous appearance the more they are used. Furthermore, this is a premium quality rug in terms of weave density, hand-knotted using the Turkish knot—or, in other words, the double knot technique. Thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 1,350,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

The production of Mamluk rugs began in workshops in Cairo in the 14th century. By the 16th century, the reputation of Mamluk rugs had spread worldwide, and they had become indispensable for Mamluk sultans and high-ranking Western aristocrats. Due to this fame, they were exported from the present-day Egyptian region to the entire world. Following Yavuz Sultan Selim's conquest of the Mamluk state, the Mamluk rug acquired new characteristics under Ottoman influence. In this form, it continued to be exported globally and has preserved its distinctive features to the present day.

3-CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the rug's material and the type of stain. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, rug shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be blotted thoroughly with a paper towel; then, it should be wiped with a cloth using the lather from a white bar soap. It should also be kept in mind that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on a rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp, making it much more difficult to remove. Lastly, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner you trust who specializes in hand-woven rugs.
