1- FEATURES OF THE CARPET

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The threads were produced entirely by hand using a spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots were dyed using root dyes, which are natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, the wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the petal; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets produced from root-dyed yarns develop a brighter appearance as they are used. On the other hand, this carpet is a high-quality product in terms of weaving density and was woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Iranian carpets. Finally, approximately 300,000 hand knots were made in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet-weaving tradition. These carpets were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries. These carpets were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were produced exclusively for the residents of the Ottoman palace, as well as for the residences of high-ranking diplomats and palace rooms.

These carpets generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire’s cultural and artistic traditions. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are motifs used in Sultani carpets. These motifs not only reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet but also carry traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in colorful styles that harmonize with both modern and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemical substances should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered and the area wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped off, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner who you trust and who specializes in hand-woven carpets.
