1- FEATURES OF THE CARPET

The warp and weft of this carpet are cotton, while the knots are wool yarn. The threads were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool threads used in the knots were dyed using natural dyes, also known as madder root dyes. For example, to obtain the color red, wool threads are boiled with rose petals, and the thread takes on the color of the petal; threads dyed in this manner are referred to as madder-dyed. Carpets produced from madder-dyed threads gain a more vibrant appearance as they are used. Furthermore, this carpet is a high-quality piece in terms of knot density and was woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Iranian carpets. Finally, approximately 405,000 hand knots were used in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet-weaving tradition. These carpets were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and significant venues, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries. These carpets were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Moreover, they were produced specifically for the residents of the Ottoman palace, as well as for the residences of high-ranking diplomats and palace chambers.

These carpets generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are motifs used in Sultani carpets. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet, they also carry traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in colorful styles that can harmonize with both modern and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies depending on the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool threads dyed with madder root, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemical substances should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; afterward, the area should be wiped with a cloth using the lather of a white bar soap. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp, making it much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the cleaning of this carpet to a professional carpet cleaner who is experienced with hand-woven carpets and whom you trust.
