1- RUG SPECIFICATIONS

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, while the knots are wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots were dyed using root dyes—that is, natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn absorbs the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this manner are referred to as root-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from root-dyed yarns gain a more lustrous appearance the more they are used. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality piece in terms of knot density and was woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 900,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich rug-weaving tradition. These rugs were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Moreover, they were produced exclusively for the residents of the Ottoman Empire's palaces and the residences of high-ranking diplomats and palace chambers.

 

These rugs generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire’s cultural and artistic traditions. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are motifs used in Sultani rugs. These motifs not only reflect the aesthetic value of the rug but also carry traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in styles that harmonize with colorful, modern, and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the rug's material and the type of stain. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, rug shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered, and the area should be wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp, making it much more difficult to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner you trust who specializes in handwoven rugs.
