1- FEATURES OF THE RUG

This rug features a cotton warp and weft with wool pile knots. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots are dyed with root dyes, which means natural materials were used. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the petal; such yarns are referred to as root-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from root-dyed yarns gain a more lustrous appearance the more they are used. On the other hand, this rug is of top quality in terms of weaving density and was woven using the Turkish knot technique, also known as the double knot; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Iranian rugs. Finally, approximately 450,000 hand knots were used in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These rugs were produced primarily in the 16th and 17th centuries for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and very meticulous craftsmanship. Moreover, they were produced specifically for the residents of the Ottoman Empire's palaces and the residences of high-ranking diplomats and palace chambers.

These rugs generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire’s cultural and artistic traditions. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani rugs. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the rug, they also bear traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in colors that harmonize with modern and classic style furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the rug's material and the type of stain. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be blotted well with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered, and the area should be wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on the rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp, making it much harder to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner who you trust and who specializes in hand-woven rugs.
