1- FEATURES OF THE RUG

This rug features a cotton warp and weft with wool yarn knots. The yarns are produced entirely by hand using a drop spindle. The wool yarns used for the knots are dyed using root dyes, which are natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the petals; yarns dyed in this manner are referred to as root-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from root-dyed yarns gain a more lustrous appearance as they are used. Furthermore, this rug is a high-quality piece in terms of weaving density and is woven using the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 300,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the rich carpet-weaving tradition of the Ottoman Empire. These rugs were produced specifically for use in Ottoman palaces and significant venues, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. They were specifically produced for residents of the Ottoman Empire’s palaces and the residences of high-ranking diplomats, as well as for palace chambers.

These rugs generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire’s cultural and artistic traditions. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani rugs. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the rug, they also carry traces of the era in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in a style that will harmonize with colorful, modern, and classic furniture.

 

3-CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies depending on the material of the rug and the type of stain. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the affected area should first be blotted thoroughly with a paper towel; then, white bar soap should be lathered, and the area should be wiped with a cloth. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on a rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much more difficult to remove.
