1- FEATURES OF THE CARPET

The warp and weft of this carpet are made of cotton, and the knots are made of wool yarn. The yarns were produced entirely by hand using a spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed using root dyes, which are natural materials. For example, to obtain the red color, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the petal; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Carpets produced from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance as they are used. On the other hand, this carpet is a top-quality carpet in terms of weaving density and has been woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Iranian carpets. Finally, approximately 325,000 hand knots were tied in the weaving of this carpet.

2- HISTORY OF THE CARPET

Sultani carpets are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich carpet weaving tradition. These carpets were produced, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, for use in Ottoman palaces and important venues. These carpets were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were produced specifically for the residents of the Ottoman Empire's palaces, as well as for the residences and palace rooms of high-ranking diplomats.

These carpets generally bear traces of the Ottoman Empire’s cultural and artistic traditions. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani carpets. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the carpet, they also carry traces of the era in which they were woven. Today, Sultani carpets are generally produced in styles that will harmonize with colorful, modern, and classic-style furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Carpet cleaning varies according to the material of the carpet and the type of dirt. Since this carpet is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, carpet shampoos or detergents containing chemical substances should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this carpet, the affected area should first be thoroughly dried with a paper towel; then, the area should be wiped with a cloth using the lather of a white bar soap. It should also be kept in mind that immediate intervention is very important when something is spilled on a carpet. If the spilled liquid remains on the carpet for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp and become much harder to remove. Finally, we recommend that you have this carpet washed by a professional carpet cleaner you trust who specializes in hand-woven carpets.
