1- FEATURES OF THE RUG

The warp and weft of this rug are cotton, and the knots are wool yarn. The yarns are produced entirely by hand using a spindle. The wool yarns used in the knots are dyed using root dyes, which means natural materials. For example, to obtain the color red, wool yarns are boiled with rose petals, and the yarn takes on the color of the rose petals; yarns dyed in this way are called root-dyed yarns. Rugs produced from root-dyed yarns gain a brighter appearance as they are used. Furthermore, this rug is of top quality in terms of weaving density and has been woven with the Turkish knot, also known as the double knot technique; thanks to this feature, it is more durable and has a longer lifespan compared to Persian rugs. Finally, approximately 450,000 hand knots were made in the weaving of this rug.

2- HISTORY OF THE RUG

Sultani rugs are an important part of the Ottoman Empire's rich rug-weaving tradition. These rugs were produced primarily in the 16th and 17th centuries to be used in Ottoman palaces and important venues. These rugs were woven with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Furthermore, they were produced specifically for the residents of the Ottoman palace, as well as for the residences of high-ranking diplomats and palace chambers.

These rugs generally bear traces of the cultural and artistic traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Flowers, tree motifs, geometric patterns, and figurative symbols are the motifs used in Sultani rugs. While these motifs reflect the aesthetic value of the rug, they also carry traces of the period in which they were woven. Today, Sultani rugs are generally produced in styles that harmonize with colorful, modern, and classic furniture.

 

3- CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Rug cleaning varies according to the material of the rug and the type of stain. Since this rug is made of wool yarns dyed with root dyes, rug shampoos or detergents containing chemicals should not be used. If any liquid is spilled on this rug, the area should first be thoroughly blotted with a paper towel; then, the affected area should be wiped with a cloth using the lather of white bar soap. It should also be remembered that immediate intervention is crucial when something is spilled on a rug. If the spilled liquid remains on the rug for a long time without being wiped, the stain will penetrate the warp, making it much harder to remove. Finally, we recommend that you entrust the washing of this rug to a professional rug cleaner that you trust and that specializes in handwoven rugs.
