Halı Alırken En Çok Sorulan 12 Soru ve Cevabı

12 Most Asked Questions and Answers When Buying a Rug

Over the years, we've spoken to tens of thousands of customers. Buyers from all over Turkey, the Gulf countries, Europe, and America asked the same questions. Which material is better? How many meters of rug should I buy? Hand-knotted or machine-made? Why is my rug shedding? How do I clean it?

As these questions repeated, we realized: The rug buying process is still full of uncertainties for most people. In this guide, we openly share the experience we've accumulated while managing our stock of over 100,000 m². Behind every question is a real buyer concern; behind every answer are years of accumulated knowledge.

"Which Material is Right for Me?" — All Material Questions

Is a wool rug or a bamboo rug more durable?

Both are durable materials, but in different ways. Wool, thanks to its natural elasticity, offers high resistance to foot traffic; the compressed fibers regain their shape after a while. A good wool rug can be used for 30 to 50 years, or even longer. Bamboo, on the other hand, excels in surface smoothness and luster; however, it's not as long-lasting as wool under heavy traffic.

The choice depends somewhat on the room: for heavily used living rooms and sitting areas, wool is a safer choice. For less used bedrooms or studies, bamboo offers a beautiful alternative. You can easily see the difference when you compare wool rug models and the bamboo rug collection side by side.

Can a jute rug be used outdoors?

Since jute is made from natural plant fibers, it is sensitive to humidity. When exposed to direct rain or ground moisture, the fibers can rot over time. Therefore, it is not recommended for outdoor areas such as open terraces or balconies. However, it can be used without problems in a covered terrace or a well-ventilated conservatory.

For outdoor use, synthetic polypropylene-based rugs or specially produced patio rugs are a more suitable choice. Jute rugs, in dry and enclosed environments, look beautiful for many years with their organic texture and earthy color tones.

What is the difference between natural dyes and synthetic dyes? Is it really that important?

Short answer: Yes, the difference is real and important.

Synthetic dyes are produced by chemical processes; the results are homogeneous and reproducible. The disadvantage is their susceptibility to fading and discoloration over the long term. Natural dyes, on the other hand, are obtained from natural sources such as onion skins, woad, walnut shells, and madder roots. When these dyes are applied to a rug, they do not fade over time; the color matures and deepens. After decades, a naturally dyed rug's color gains a richer patina compared to a new one.

In addition, natural dyes are healthier for both producers and users as they contain no chemicals. Their price is higher than synthetic dyed rugs; however, this difference pays off in value many times over in the long run. You can feel this depth of color even in photos when you look at the natural dyed rug collection.

From 40 Years of Experience: The simplest way to check the color of a natural-dyed rug is with the sun test. A natural-dyed rug placed in front of a window for a long time will retain its color, while a synthetic-dyed rug in the same position will noticeably fade within a few years. This difference becomes extremely prominent, especially in sunny entryways and living rooms.

Is a silk rug suitable for daily use?

Silk rugs are the finest and most valuable products in rug making. Silk rugs from traditional production centers like Hereke are considered works of art. However, they are not ideal for daily foot traffic; the surface is delicate, and with heavy use, the silk fibers can become compressed over time.

The most suitable places for silk rugs are: special rooms with low traffic, use as wall decoration, or display for collection purposes. If you want both the luster of silk and everyday durability, wool and silk blend rugs offer a good compromise; the resilience of wool is combined with the aesthetics of silk.

"Which Rug for Which Room?" — Room and Size Questions

How big a rug should I buy for the living room?

This is the most frequently asked question and the one where most mistakes are made. Buying a small rug creates a significant problem both aesthetically and proportionally.

The basic rule is: At least the front legs of the sofa group should be on the rug. In the ideal configuration, all legs are on the rug. Measure the distance between the front legs of your sofa and the front legs of the armchairs opposite it, then add 30-40 cm to this measurement on all sides; this resulting dimension is your minimum rug size.

If your sofa is 220 cm long and you have two single armchairs opposite it, a rug of at least 200x290 or 240x340 cm will look proportionate. You can filter by size in the living room rugs collection.

Should a rug be bought for a child's room? Which type is recommended?

Buying a rug for a child's room is a very appropriate decision for both comfort and safety. A rug reduces the risk of falls on hard surfaces, provides sound insulation, and offers a warmer surface for the child's play area.

The following criteria stand out in material selection: natural and chemical-free, easy to clean, and durable. In this regard, short-pile wool rugs are an ideal choice. Wool has natural antibacterial properties; it is resistant to mites and dust mites. Models produced with natural dyes instead of synthetic dyes are chemically safe options for children. Models that meet these characteristics can be found among children's room rugs.

Does a large or small rug suit a bedroom better?

This depends on the size of the room and the position of the bed. However, as a general rule, choosing a small rug in the bedroom often leads to visually uncomfortable results.

The most frequently recommended configuration: the rug should go under the bed, with at least 60-70 cm of rug visible on both sides of the bed and at the foot. This both looks proportionate and ensures your feet land on a warm surface when you get out of bed in the morning. Placing only a small mat-like rug in front of the bed, on the other hand, makes the space appear smaller and messier. You can filter by size on the bedroom rugs page.

What should be considered when choosing a rug for hallways and entrances?

Entrances and hallways are the highest traffic areas of the house. When making a selection, durability and ease of cleaning should be prioritized.

Dark colors and geometric, dense patterns mask dirt marks much better. Short pile should be preferred; long pile quickly flattens in a hallway and leaves permanent marks. Runner-style or narrow rugs are made for these spaces. Options suitable for your room size can be found among entrance and entryway rugs and hallway rugs.

"Why is This Happening to My Rug?" — Usage and Problem Questions

Why is my new rug shedding so much?

A new rug, especially one made of wool or a wool blend, may shed in the first weeks and months. This is completely normal and not a quality issue. Short fiber ends trapped between the threads during weaving come to the surface with use and vacuuming; over time, this shedding stops.

To speed it up: Clean regularly with a vacuum cleaner, not a light lint roller. Always move the vacuum in the direction of the pile; vacuuming against the pile will increase shedding. This shedding will largely decrease within the first three months and almost completely stop within six months.

White lines or light-colored marks have appeared on my rug, what should I do?

This is a condition known as "pile crush" or "shading." It occurs when the rug pile lies in different directions due to pressure or vacuuming, becoming visible as light reflects off the surface at different angles. It is not a quality issue.

The solution is simple: Use a damp cloth or brush to smooth the pile in one direction. The appearance will improve within a few days. To prevent this, always vacuum in the same direction and occasionally shift heavy furniture on the rug by a few centimeters.

Something spilled on my rug, what should I do?

The first ten minutes are critical. Whatever happens, do not rub the stain; rubbing spreads the stain and accelerates its penetration into the fibers.

The correct approach is: Absorb the stain by blotting from the outside in with a clean cloth or paper towel. For liquid stains, cold water is sufficient; for oily stains, a small amount of liquid dish soap (pH neutral) and cold water. Wait for the stain to dry completely; reapply if necessary. For stubborn stains like tea, coffee, or wine, contacting a professional rug cleaning service is the safest option.

Artisan's Note: Stain removal is easier on naturally dyed hand-woven rugs; the bonding method of natural dyes leaves fewer pores on the surface compared to synthetic dyes. On the other hand, chemical binders in machine-made rugs can cause some stains to permanently adhere to the fibers in the long run. This difference is a small but concrete practical reason for choosing natural dyes.

Why has my rug faded over time?

Fading can have several different causes. The most common is exposure to direct sunlight; UV rays can fade both synthetic and low-quality natural dyes over time. Naturally dyed rugs are much more resistant in this regard.

Another reason is the use of incorrect cleaning products. Chlorine-containing detergents, acidic or alkaline cleaners rapidly degrade rug dyes. Always choose pH-neutral products for rug cleaning; look for the phrase "suitable for rugs" on the label.

To prevent fading, taking protective measures such as thick curtains or UV-filtered glass in areas that receive intense sunlight is beneficial.

"How Do I Decide When Buying?" — Purchase Process Questions

Is buying rugs online safe? Do the colors on the screen reflect reality?

This is one of the questions our international customers ask most frequently. The honest answer is: Colors can appear different depending on screen calibration and ambient light. However, this difference can be largely minimized with accurate content and photography.

We make sure that product pages include multiple photos and images taken under different lighting conditions. If you have difficulty deciding on a color, you can contact us and request additional photos or videos via WhatsApp. You can also visit our showroom in Ümraniye, Istanbul, to see the rug in person.

Another guarantee that makes online shopping safe is our 14-day return policy: If the rug doesn't look as you expected in your home, we'll accept returns without asking for a reason.

Should I buy a hand-knotted or machine-made rug? My budget is limited.

When the budget is limited, the answer to this question depends on your intended use.

If you are considering a long-term investment, it would be smarter to wait a little longer and buy a hand-knotted rug. Hand-knotted rugs may seem to have a high initial cost; however, when used for 20-30 years, the cost per square meter remains well below that of a machine-made rug that needs to be replaced every 5-7 years.

If it's for short-term use or a variable situation like a rental home, machine-made rugs offer a practical and affordable solution. As a middle ground, it's also possible to find good quality machine-made models with wool and bamboo blends.

Afghan, Ushak, Mamluk... What do these names mean?

Rug names usually reflect the production center, design tradition, or historical origin.

Afghan rugs are rugs based on the traditional weaving culture from Afghanistan and surrounding regions. They typically feature geometric motifs in dark red, burgundy, and navy blue tones. They are known for their dense knot structure and durability. The Afghan rugs collection includes the strongest representatives of this tradition.

Ushak rugs continue a historical weaving tradition belonging to the Ushak province of Turkey. Adorning European palaces and mansions since the 15th century, Ushak rugs are known for their medallion and star motifs. Ushak rugs and geometrically patterned Ushak models offer modern interpretations of this deeply rooted tradition.

Mamluk rugs possess a distinctive aesthetic with their geometric lattice patterns and motifs originating from Mamluk Egypt and Syria. They are favored by collectors due to their intricate geometry and rich color composition. Mamluk rugs include models that carry this rare aesthetic.

How should I decide on color when buying a rug?

Consider the color decision in two ways: the room's existing color palette and how much light the room receives.

In a room with light-colored walls and furniture, both light and dark rugs work; a dark rug adds depth and warmth to the space. In a room dominated by dark furniture, a light or medium-toned rug provides a more balanced look.

If there is little light, choose a light-colored rug; it will make the room feel visually larger and brighter. In a room that gets a lot of sun, dark or richly colored rugs are safer for color longevity; the risk of fading is lower. You can visualize your room by browsing beige rugs, gray rugs, and red rugs collections.
